There are a few basic rules for playing poker. The first is to keep your mouth shut. There’s no point in blaming the dealer when you’ve just lost a hand. This will only cause confusion and ruin the atmosphere at the table. Secondly, don’t talk while playing poker. You might be tempted to talk, but this will only give your opponent information. Also, it’s not very funny when you’re losing in a similar spot and your opponent overhears it.

In some poker variants, players must place blind bets, either to replace the ante or to add to it. The dealer rotates from round to round. It’s also customary for players to take turns as the dealer each round, as long as they call the blind bet before checking. Unlike many other card games, poker is played with poker chips. The white chip is the lowest-value chip. Red and blue chips are worth ten, twenty or more white chips. Blue chips are worth two, four, or five reds. Players start the game by purchasing chips. If they’re not the first to place a bet, they’re “buying in.”
